NASA FISO Presentation: The German Free Flyer Study

The speakers were Uwe Derz (Airbus Defence and Space) and Juergen Hill (DLR) who discussed “The German Free Flyer Study: A European Perspective on an International Infrastructure in the Earth-‐Moon Libration Point 2”.
Uwe Derz is a study manager and system engineer in the Advanced Projects Group of Airbus Defense and Space (former Astrium) in Bremen, Germany. He is responsible for executing feasibility studies on phase 0/A level, mainly in the area of human spaceflight and exploration for the European and the German Space Agencies (ESA, DLR). Mr. Derz joined Airbus Defence and Space in 2009 and contributed to the ESA Exploration Architecture Study as well as the ESA Scenario Study on Human Spaceflight and Exploration. 2012-‐2014, he managed a joined Airbus DS/DLR study on a free flying element for exploration in the vicinity of the Moon. Mr. Derz studied mechanical engineering (Dipl-Ing.) with specialization in aerospace systems at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. He participated in the ESA Alpbach Summer School as well as the Space Station Design Workshop of the University of Stuttgart. His scientific work covered architecture, system and mission analysis of human and robotic elements for (cis‐)lunar exploration, sample return missions to Mars and Near Earth Objects as well as Asteroid Deflection.
Juergen Hill works at the department of ESA Affairs of the German Space Agency (DLR) where he is responsible for the human spaceflight and exploration programmes. As German delegate to the ESA Programme Board for Human Spaceflight, Microgravity and Exploration (PB‐HME) and the ESA Science Programme Committee (SPC), he coordinates the German contributions to exploration activities across the agency and with international partners. He also leads the DLR involvement in the International Space Exploration Coordination Group (ISECG), contributing to international discussions on future exploration planning and the development/refinement of the Global Exploration Roadmap. Juergen Hill studied aerospace engineering at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and the University of Sydney, Australia. He earned a PhD from the University of Stuttgart for his research on conceptual architectures for lunar exploration and on tools for lunar surface infrastructure design and performance assessment.
