Now available is the August 31, 2016 NASA Future In-Space Operations (FISO) telecon material. The speaker was Jim Bell (ASU) who discussed “Telerobotics from Mars Orbit – Lessons from Robotic Exploration for Human Missions to Mars”
Professor Jim Bell is an astronomer and planetary scientist in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University, and President of The Planetary Society. His research interests focus on the geology, geochemistry, and mineralogy of planetary surfaces, and he has been an active member of many NASA robotic planetary science mission teams, including Mars Pathfinder, NEAR, Mars Odyssey, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. He is the lead of the Pancam imaging team for the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity, the Deputy lead for the Mastcam cameras on the Curiosity rover, and the lead for the Mastcam-Z cameras on the upcoming Mars-2020 rover. Jim also writes magazine articles and popular science books like “Postcards from Mars” and, most recently “The Interstellar Age”. He was awarded the Carl Sagan Medal by the American Astronomical Society for excellence in public communication of planetary science, and has been the President of The Planetary Society, the world’s largest public space advocacy organization, since 2008.
