NASA FISO Presentation: The James Webb Space Telescope

Now available is the October 28, 2015 NASA Future In-Space Operations (FISO) telecon material. The speaker was Jonathan Gardner (NASA GSFC) who discussed “The James Webb Space Telescope”.
Jonathan P. Gardner is the Chief of the Observational Cosmology Laboratory at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, and the Deputy Senior Project Scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope. He got a Bachelor’s Degree from Harvard and a Masters and PhD from the University of Hawaii, all in Astronomy. After 4 years as a NATO Research Postdoc at the University of Durham in England, he came to Goddard in 1996, initially to work with Hubble’s Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. He now leads a group that studies the Universe as a whole, from its dramatic beginnings in the Big Bang, to the mysterious dark energy that will determine its future. The James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, will look backwards in time to find the first galaxies that formed after the Big Bang, to trace their evolution into galaxies like our own Milky Way, and to connect the formation of stars and planets with the history of our own Solar System.
