What makes a planet habitable?
Just in time for Halloween, we’re on the hunt for alien life!
Well, sort of.

Since humans first started telling stories around the fire, we’ve wanted to know where life comes from. Humanity’s many origin myths and legends signal an attempt to answer this question, but scientists at the Earth and Planets Laboratory are now tackling this mystery from a planetary science perspective.

In two weeks, on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at 6:30 PM, Carnegie Staff Scientist Dr. Anat Shahar will present, What makes a planet habitable? In her talk, she will explain how scientists at Carnegie are studying which features of a planet’s several-billion-year history create and maintain an environment that is suitable for life.

In one of the great discoveries of our lifetimes, the Galaxy turns out to be teeming with planets. For the first time in human history, we can study a wide range of planets that may be hosts for life!

Shahar will explain how she and other scientists at Carnegie are studying which features of a planet’s several-billion-year history create and maintain an environment that may be suitable for life.

What is the Neighborhood Lecture Series?

For fifteen years, the Carnegie Institution for Science’s Earth and Planets Laboratory has hosted public science lectures at our Broad Branch Road campus in northwest Washington, D.C. During these lectures, we break complex topics down for a public audience.

These are the perfect events for scientists, science enthusiasts, students, and folks who just want to spend an evening learning something new.

These events started as an opportunity to meet our neighbors and share the cutting-edge science going on next door. Now that we’re going virtual, the whole world is our neighborhood! Welcome!
