The return-to-service mission for the heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA is now targeted for January 2005.

Details of Arianespace’s new launch planning were provided last week by CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall in Paris. The mission will be the first for a heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA version after the launcher’s unsuccessful maiden flight in December 2002.

Today’s programme is looking at work that has been done for improving the Vulcan 2 cryogenic engine, including a full-scale test firing filmed in Vernon in France. The Vulcan 2 engine is one of the main improvements of the Ariane 5 ECA compared to the current generic Ariane 5 launcher.

The programme includes an A-roll of six minutes (split audio – English voiceover) and a B-roll with clean international sound.
