Successful Delta II launch carries satellites
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Vandenberg AFB launched a Delta II rocket today carrying NASA’s Earth Observing 1 satellite, Argentina’s SAC-C satellite and a satellite named Munin that was developed in Sweden. The rocket was launched from the base’s Space Launch Complex-2.
The launch is the result of a combined effort by the 30th Space Wing, Boeing, NASA and the Argentine Commission on Space Activities.
NASA’s Earth Observing 1 satellite focuses on the development and testing of a set of advanced technology land imaging instruments. Also aboard the Delta II is the SAC-C spacecraft, an international mission to study the structure and dynamics of the Earth’s atmosphere, ionosphere and geomagnetic field. Munin is designed to report on auroral activity in the northern and southern hemispheres.
