Space Product Development Weekly Highlights – June 24, 2002

MITAC Testbeds Telemedicine Abroad: A Medical Informatics and Technology Applications Consortium (MITAC) Commercial Space Center technical team traveled to Ecuador to continue its work on telemedicine testbeds. The team led by Dr. Ronald Merrell, director of MITAC, evaluated and validated telemedicine technologies, including hardware built in the MITAC lab as well as software developed in conjunction with industry affiliate TeleVital. During this trip, surgical procedures and vital information of anesthesia was transmitted via the Internet through a satellite phone to the MITAC lab from a mobile surgical facility in Ecuador.
