SOHO Pick of the Week: Earth-directed coronal mass ejection on 9 Oct 2001
A ‘full-halo’ coronal mass ejection (CME) explodes toward the Earth
at about 1000 km/s. The images taken by the LASCO C3 instrument show
the expanding cloud of particles in visible light. The charged
particles may strike the Earth’s magnetosphere as early as Oct. 11th.
