STRONG SOLAR FLARES OCCUR

2000 July 11 at 8:40 a.m. MDT (2000 July 11 1440 UT)

**** STRONG SOLAR FLARES OCCUR ****

A large, complex sunspot group has produced two major solar flares. These flares produced moderate to strong radio blackouts that reached
categories R2 and R3 on the NOAA Space Weather Scale. The first radio blackout, an R2 (moderate), occurred at 3:42 p.m. MDT (2142 UTC)
on 10 July. The second blackout, an R3 (strong), occurred today at 7:10 a.m. MDT (1310 UTC). NOAA space weather forecasters expect a
category S1 (minor) solar radiation storm to occur later today in the wake of today’s major flare. Forecasters are also expecting a geomagnetic
storm to occur during July 13 – 14 following today’s flare. The sunspot group responsible for these flares, referred to as Region 9077, is
expected to produce more category R2 to R3 flares before crossing to the far side of the Sun on July 21.
