Detailed Description:
It was high drama on live TV last November. A spacewalk that was destined to become the centerpiece for an exciting and highly successful mission – one that was far from routine — to save the International Space Station.
Mission Specialist Scott Parazynski, M.D., worked while balanced at the end of an extended robotic arm, silhouetted against the brilliant orange glow of a partially extended solar wing of the International Space Station. Marring the wing were two visible tears in the panels. Without the power the panel is supposed to generate, NASA would have to halt further construction on the station, including the addition of laboratories scheduled for December and April.
Tonight, The Explorers Club invites you to join Dr. Parazynski as he takes you along on one of the most dangerous spacewalks in NASA’s history: enduring seven hours and 19 minutes of time working in the vacuum of space while risking potential electrical shock, sharp objects that could puncture his spacesuit and a long journey back to the safety of the station.
Dr. Parzynski is the recipient of a Space Station Team Excellence Award (1996); two NASA Exceptional Service Medals; five NASA Space Flight Medals; a NASA Distinguished Service Medal and a Gold Medal from The American Institute of Polish Culture. He enjoys mountaineering, rock climbing, flying, SCUBA diving, skiing, travel, woodworking, and nature photography. A commercial, multi-engine, seaplane and instrument-rated pilot, Dr. Parazynski has logged over 2000 flight hours in a variety of aircraft. A member of the American Alpine Club, his summits include Cerro Aconcagua (at 22,841 feet above sea level, the tallest mountain in the world outside of Asia) and 53 of Colorado’s peaks over 14,000 feet in altitude.
