ROSES-12 Amendment 27: Change of Scope and Points of Contact for Appendix D.8, Strategic Astrophysics Technology

Over the next decade and beyond, NASA’s Astrophysics Division expects to undertake a suite of space flight missions that will explore the nature of the universe at its largest scales, its earliest moments, and its most extreme conditions; missions that will study how galaxies and stars formed and evolved to shape the universe we see today; and missions that will search out and characterize the planets and planetary systems orbiting other stars. As compelling as these future missions will be, implementing them presents many daunting technological challenges. To overcome these challenges and pave the way to ever more ambitious missions, NASA’s Astrophysics Division has established the Strategic Astrophysics Technology (SAT) program to support the maturation of key technologies to the point at which they are feasible for implementation in space flight missions.

This amendment makes a number of small changes to the text of Appendix D.8 SAT. The changes include: updated points of contact for the Technology Development for Physics of the Cosmos Missions (TPCOS), Technology Development for the Cosmic Origins Program (TCOP), and Balloon piggyback payloads; the preproposal informational workshops for TPCOS and TCOP have been removed; a date for the Technology Development for Exoplanet Missions (TDEM) preproposal informational workshop has been added; reporting methods for the PIs of selected TPCOS and TCOP programs have been specified in additional detail; priorities for TCOP Technology Development have been updated to correspond with the most recent release of the Program Annual Technology Report; and the maximum duration of awards for the TDEM and TCOP elements is now three years.

The due date for notices of intent to propose and proposals remain unchanged at January 25, 2013, and March 22, 2013, respectively.

On or about December 18, 2012, this Amendment to the NASA Research Announcement “Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) 2012” (NNH12ZDA001N) will be posted on the NASA research opportunity homepage at http://nspires.nasaprs.com/ and will appear on the RSS feed at: http://nasascience.nasa.gov/researchers/sara/grant-solicitations/roses-2012.
