The position is located in the NASA Office of External Relations History Division. This position manages the NASA History Division to assure the establishment and integration of necessary planning, programming and coordination of the NASA History Program.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Provides guidance to other historical researchers in developing historical studies and conducting research. Researches, evaluates, documents, and preserves the institutional memory of the agency. Identifies gaps in historical documentation and aggressively seeks out needed information that is important to the agency’s history.

Serves as Contracting Officer’s Technical Representative (COTR) on numerous book contracts with outside historians on projects in involving the Agency’s history.

Researches, writes, and delivers speeches to civic organizations, historical conferences, and agency related audiences concerning the historical topic of study. Also researches and writes material suitable for professional publication, and background material to support senior management decision-making and oral presentations.

Studies typically include a variety of fields of history and are to be used as the basis for the planning and development of regional programs for the acquisition, preservation, restoration, reconstruction, and interpretation of physical evidences of major historical significance. Provides guidance to other historical researchers in developing historical studies and conducting research.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

A one year supervisory probationary period may be required.
Occasional travel may be required
This is a drug-testing designated position
Position subject to random drug testing
Applicant must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Basic Education Requirement:
A. Degree: history; or related field that includes at least 18 semester hours in history.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that includes at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the grade level, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

GS-14 Specialized experience is defined as: experience in historical research methodology and scholarly writing and/or editing in the fields of history, history of science or science studies. Experience serving as a Contracting Officer’s Technical representative (COTR) is also desirable.

GS-15 Specialized experience is defined as: experience in developing historical studies and conducting research of history. Experience in developing written historical materials for professional publication
