Major duties: This position is intended to manage the Space Life and Physical Sciences Research and Applications (SLPRSA) Division in the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate at NASA, Headquarters. The incumbent is responsible for comprehensive oversight of research in space biomedicine, space biology, and microgravity physical sciences and advocacy for this science, the representation of this science within NASA, development of health risk mitigation strategies in support of space exploration, and handling of domestic and international external interfaces ensuring the effective execution of research activities.

Execute high quality, high value research and applications activities in Space Life & Physical Sciences, including research to enable human space exploration.
Objectives: Develop breakthrough discoveries in fundamental life and physical sciences that leverage the unique space environment Contribute to the maximum utilization of the International Space Station through support of high priority research and applications Reduce risks for long duration space exploration for humans Facilitate the exchange of medical data on crews for research and application purposes within limits of medical privacy concerns. The NASA Headquarters SLPSRA organization will oversee a set of programs, led by Centers, to achieve SLPSRA goals. SLPSRA activities range from small basic research grants to development of flight hardware. SLPSRA and its programs will compete research and flight opportunities. SLPSRA will work towards a seamless “front end” portal to the International Space Station (ISS) and regular funding opportunities. SLPSRA will coordinate with the Center for the Advancement Science in Space (CASIS) the nonprofit organization (NPO) selected to manage the ISS National Laboratory to best serve the broad community. SLPSRA activities will be highly aligned to the recent Decadal Survey on Biological and Physical Sciences in Space, by the National Research Council.
Qualifications Desired: Applicants should have a combination of education, research and/or program management experience with particular knowledge and experience in the subject commensurate with the research topics within SLPSRA.
Basic Education Requirement: A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with major study in physical sciences (chemistry, biology, physics), engineering, or a related technical field. Incumbent must be recognized leader in their field and have demonstrated oversight of large projects and/or research groups. Must have excellent communication skills.
