Official RSC Energia Press Release about commencement of the activities by a visiting crew onboard the International Space Station
Today the Space Shuttle Atlantis crew, which boarded
the International Space Station on September 10, 2000, has initiated
the activities in the Space Station pressurized compartments.
Crew transfer to the Space Station began on September
12, 2000 at 6 hours 47 minutes Moscow Time (2:47GMT) after the
Unity Module hatch was opened. At 8 hours 32 minutes Moscow
Time the hatch of the Zarya Functional Cargo Block Instrument-Cargo
Module was opened with the subsequent opening (at 9 hours 51
minutes) of the Russian Zvezda Service Module. As the crew members
passed through the ISS modules, they monitored atmospheric parameters
in the module compartments.
At 11 hours 35 minutes Moscow Time the hatch
into the Russian logistics vehicle Progress M1-3 was opened.
Thus, the present day saw commencement of the
activities related to unloading the Russian and American spacecraft,
installation of the hardware delivered and activation of the
Zvezda Module systems and assemblies, which were prepositioned
in the orbital insertion processing stage of the module.
The Russian cosmonauts Yu. Malenchenko and B.
Morukov were directly involved in all the operations. According
to the Moscow MCC-C LOCT specialists data, the ISS after being
reboosted the day before was in an orbit with inclination of
51.6*, maximum and minimum height of 385.5 and 360.3 km, respectively;
the orbital period of 91.7 minutes.
The progress of the Space Station – based activities
was controlled by the LOCT specialists. The MCC-M main operations
management room housed the directors and leading specialists
from S.P. Korolev RSC Energia, the primary manufacturer responsible
for building the ISS Russian Segment as well as the specialists
from other Russian enterprises and organizations involved in
the Project.
