Recent insights from the biological sciences on how organisms thrive in “extreme” environments have not yet been incorporated into the scientific strategies for detecting whether life exists or has ever existed on Mars.

ASTROBIOLOGY STRATEGY FOR THE EXPLORATION OF MARS, a new report from the National Research Council, incorporates findings from the environmental and life sciences with strategies published in recent years for future exploration of the planet.

The report also examines promising life-detection techniques.

THE REPORT WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE beginning at 10 A.M. EDT on Tuesday, May 29.

Reporters can obtain copies by contacting the National Academies’ Office of News and Public Information at tel. 202-334-2138 or e-mail news@nas.edu.
