Significant events identified by Satellite Analysis Branch meteorologists and reviewed by the

Operational Significant Event Imagery support team Thursday August 7, 2003 are as follows:










FIRES IN PORTUGAL AND SPAIN

Heat signatures (red), burn scars (charcoal to dark green), and smoke (light blue haze) are visible

from fires burning in Portugal and Spain in this NOAA-16 image. Rising temperatures on

Wednesday helped to spark new fires in Portugal where a total of 1,565 firefighters and 700

soldiers were battling the blazes. The Portuguese wildfires have now claimed fourteen lives and

an unknown number of homes.

TYPHOON 11W (ETAU)

Typhoon 11W (Etau) was located over the East China Sea near 27.4N 128.6E at 06:00 UTC.

Etau has been moving north-northeastward at 10 knots with maximum sustained winds estimated

at 110 knots, gusts to 135 knots.
