Significant events identified by Satellite Analysis Branch meteorologists and reviewed by the

Operational Significant Event Imagery support team Wednesday August 6, 2003 are as follows:










FIRES IN BRITISH COLUMBIA AND ALBERTA, CANADA

Heat signatures (red) and smoke plumes (light blue haze) are visible from fires burning in British

Columbia and Alberta, Canada. A blaze approaching a suburb north of Kamloops has forced

about 3,500 people to evacuate their homes. According to officials, the wildfires raging

throughout both provinces are considered the worst in the region in 50 years.

FIRES IN PORTUGAL AND SPAIN

Heat signatures (red), burn scars (charcoal to dark green), and smoke (light blue haze) are visible

from fires burning in Portugal and Spain in this NOAA-16 image. Rising temperatures on

Wednesday helped to spark new fires in Portugal where a total of 1,565 firefighters and 700

soldiers were battling the blazes. The Portuguese wildfires have now claimed fourteen lives and

an unknown number of homes.

TYPHOON 11W (ETAU)

Typhoon 11W (Etau) was located over the Western Pacific Ocean near 22.9N 128.8E at 06:00

UTC. Etau has been moving north-northwestward at 13 knots with maximum sustained winds

estimated at 95 knots, gusts to 115 knots.
