SMOKE FROM BURNING OIL PIPELINE IN NORTHERN IRAQ

Black smoke (indicated by the yellow arrow) is visible due to an oil pipeline that was set aflame

in northern Iraq in this MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) image from

the Terra satellite.

FIRES IN IDAHO AND MONTANA

Heat signatures and smoke plumes (light blue haze) are visible from several fires burning in

Idaho and Montana. The Mineral-Primm Fire has charred 11,500 acres northeast of Missoula,

MT. The Milepost 59 Fire has burned 5,500 acres northwest of Kamiah, ID. The Split Rock has

scorched 750 acres in Nez Perce National Forest. The Frank Church fire has charred 8,619 acres

in Payette National Forest. This information is from the National Interagency Fire Center’s

Incident Management Situation Report from August 18, 2003.
