Heat signatures (red), burn scars (dark green to charcoal), and smoke (light blue haze) are visible from
fires burning in Russia in this MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) image from
the Aqua satellite.

Heat signatures (red) and smoke (light blue haze) are visible from fires burning in New Mexico and
Arizona in this NOAA-16 image. The Dry Lakes Complex Fire (6,100 acres) and the Ten Cow Fire
(350) are burning in Gila National Forest in New Mexico. The Thomas Fire (5,157 acres) has
scorched parts of Apache National Forest in Arizona. This information is from the National
Interagency Fire Center’s Incident Management Situation Report from June 12, 2003.
