Significant events identified by Satellite Analysis Branch meteorologists and reviewed by the

Operational Significant Event Imagery support team Tuesday, August 12, 2003 are as follows:










FIRES IN PORTUGAL AND SPAIN

UTC<>Multichannel color composite<> Portugal and Spain



Heat signatures (red), burn scars (charcoal to dark green), and smoke (light blue haze) are visible

from fires burning in Portugal and Spain in this MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging

Spectroradiometer) image from the Terra satellite. Blazes have killed 15 people and have

resulted in about $1 billion in damages according to government officials.

FIRES IN IDAHO AND MONTANA

Heat signatures and smoke plumes (light blue haze) are visible from fires burning in Idaho and

Montana. The Beaver Lake Complex Fire has charred 2,500 acres in Clearwater National Forest.

The Fish Creek Fire (600 acres) and the Cherry Creek Fire (32000 acres) have scorched parts of

Lolo National Forest. The Gold 1 Fire has charred 1,200 acres in Bitterroot National Forest. The

North Fork Lick Fire has burned 800 acres in Payette National Forest. This information is from

the National Interagency Fire Center’s Incident Management Situation Report from August 12,

2003.
