EONS-14 Amendment 15: New Program Element in Appendix N, Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) Educator Institutes (MEI).

The NASA Office of Education MUREP solicits proposals from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) to plan, coordinate, and evaluate MEIs that will bring pre-service and alternative route Science, Technical, Education, and Mathematics (STEM) educators from MSIs across the country to NASA centers annually for a one week professional development session. MSIs that plan to submit a proposal may partner with other institutions.

NASA currently plans to select one award for a three-year period of performance. The awardee will be eligible for renewal for up to two additional years, based on its performance and NASA’s availability of funds.  The proposal shall contain plans to address and be guided by the following CoSTEM priorities:

Improve STEM Instruction:

Prepare 100,000 new K-12 STEM teachers by 2020 and support the existing teacher workforce.

Identify, develop, test, and support effective teacher preparation efforts that encourage teachers’ use of evidence-based practices that provide students with rich STEM learning opportunities.

Enhance STEM Experience of Undergraduate Students:

Identify and broaden implementation of evidence-based instructional practices and innovations to improve undergraduate learning and retention in STEM and develop a national architecture to improve empirical understanding of how these changes relate to key student outcomes.

Support the development of university-industry partnerships, and partnerships with Federally supported entities, to provide relevant and authentic STEM learning and research experiences for undergraduate students, particularly in their first two years.

Better Serve Groups Historically Underrepresented in STEM fields

Invest in efforts to create campus climates that are effective in improving success for students from underrepresented groups through mentorship, technical assistance, and other innovative practices.

The goal of this solicitation is to obtain proposals that demonstrate one or more of the following:

Engage with MSI(s) to bring high performing undergraduate students, who plan to teach STEM, to NASA Centers for one week to interact with NASA missions and subject matter experts.

Engage participating future educators with NASA experts to collaborate and provide the most advanced and innovative pre-service/alternate route experience possible.

Inspire future educators to help NASA communicate with students for years to come.

Reach underserved and underrepresented populations and institutions.

This Amendment creates Appendix N. Notices of Intent (NOIs) are requested by April 24, 2015, and proposals are due by June 30, 2015.

On or about March 27, 2015, this Amendment to the NASA Research Announcement “Education Opportunities in NASA STEM (EONS) 2014” NNH14ZHA001N will be posted on the NASA research opportunity homepage at http://nspires.nasaprs.com/.
