NOW Seminar Series: Season 2
Episode 3: Geochemistry & Habitability
Season 2: Science Motivations for Ocean Worlds Exploration
Episode 3: The Geochemical Exploration of Ocean Worlds & Links to Habitability
October 18, 2021
Dr. Chris Glein
Southwest Research Institute
Dr. Glein will speak about the techniques and measurements used to perform Ocean Worlds geochemistry and geochemical habitability investigations. Dr. Glein is a geochemist who studies a range of topics in planetary science, astrobiology, and organic geochemistry. He conducts theoretical and laboratory studies to understand natural chemical processes. His research interests include the formation, evolution, and habitability of moons in the outer Solar System, the emergence of life, and organic chemistry in water-rock environments.
Dr. Abel Méndez
University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo
Professor Méndez will speak about the science of investigating Ocean Worlds habitability through geochemical and environmental observation. Prof. Méndez is a planetary astrobiologist and Director of the Planetary Habitability Laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. His research focuses on the habitability of Earth, the Solar System, and extrasolar planets. Prof. Méndez is a NASA MIRS Fellow with physics and astrophysics research experience at Fermilab, NASA Goddard, NASA Ames, and the Arecibo Observatory.
