ThermoBase: A database of the phylogeny and physiology of thermophilic and hyperthermophilic organisms.
PLoS One. 2022 May 10;17(5):e0268253.
Note: From the abstract: “Thermophiles and hyperthermophiles are those organisms which grow at high temperature (> 40°C). The unusual properties of these organisms have received interest in multiple fields of biological research, and have found applications in biotechnology, especially in industrial processes. However, there are few listings of thermophilic and hyperthermophilic organisms and their relevant environmental and physiological data. Such repositories can be used to standardize definitions of thermophile and hyperthermophile limits and tolerances and would mitigate the need for extracting organism data from diverse literature sources across multiple, sometimes loosely related, research fields.” This article may be obtained online without charge.

Life Sci Space Res. 2022 May 12. Online ahead of print.
Note: From the abstract: “From antibiotics to aspirin to antimalarials and to anticancer agents, about half of the world’s best-selling drugs are derived from nature. However, accelerating climatic disruption, habitat destruction, pollution, and biodiversity loss all negatively impact the potential of natural sources to continue to serve as repositories of novel pharmaceuticals. On that basis, the final frontier for drug development is perhaps not the rainforests, coral reefs, and other natural habitats but rather the aerospace industry with its virtually unlimited and inexhaustible man-made ‘library’ of potentially bioactive compounds.” This article may be obtained online without charge.

A hitchhiker’s guide to cancer models.
Trends Biotechnol. 2022 May 7;S0167-7799(22)00101-9. Review. Online ahead of print.
Note: From the abstract: “Cancer is a complex and uniquely personal disease. More than 1.7 million people in the United States are diagnosed with cancer every year. As the burden of cancer grows, so does the need for new, more effective therapeutics and for predictive tools to identify optimal, personalized treatment options for every patient. Cancer models that recapitulate various aspects of the disease are fundamental to making advances along the continuum of cancer treatment from benchside discoveries to bedside delivery. In this review, we use a thought experiment as a vehicle to arrive at four broad categories of cancer models and explore the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for each category in advancing our understanding of the disease and improving treatment strategies.”

Covalent immune proximity-induction strategy using SuFEx-engineered bifunctional viral peptides.
ACS Chem Biol. 2022 May 6. Online ahead of print.
Note: From the abstract: “Covalent antibody recruiting molecules (cARMs) constitute a proximity-inducing chemical strategy to modulate the recognition and elimination of cancer cells by the immune system. Recognition is achieved through synthetic bifunctional molecules that use covalency to stably bridge endogenous hapten-specific antibodies like anti-dinitrophenyl (anti-DNP), with tumor antigens on cancer cell surfaces. To recruit these antibodies, cARMs are equipped with the native hapten-binding molecule. The majority of cancer-killing immune machinery, however, recognizes epitopes on protein ligands and not small molecule haptens (e.g., Fc receptors, pathogen-specific antibodies). To access this broader class of immune machinery for recruitment, we developed a covalent immune proximity-inducing strategy.” This article may be obtained online without charge.
