In case you missed it: SpaceRef website ran an article titled, “NASA Space Station On-Orbit Status Report 10 January, 2021 – Space Agriculture,” providing a status report of the many on-orbit agriculture studies that are currently being conducted. From the article: “Growing plants in space is critical to keeping crews healthy as NASA and its international partners plan human missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Just like humans living in space, microgravity affects plants and scientists want to learn how to successfully grow crops in space to sustain crews with less support from Earth.” To view the full article go to http://spaceref.com/international-space-station/nasa-space-station-on-orbit-status-report-10-january-2021--.html.

Acceptable limits for n-hexane in spacecraft atmospheres.
Aerosp Med Hum Perform. 2021 Dec 1;92(12):956-61. Review.
Note: From the abstract: “The Spacecraft Maximum Allowable Concentrations (SMACs) for C2-C9 alkanes set by NASA in 2008 under the guidance and approval of the National Research Council specifically excluded SMACs for n-hexane. Unlike other C2-C9 alkanes, n-hexane can cause polyneuropathy after metabolism in humans or rodents and so requires more stringent SMACs than the other members of this group do. This document reviews the relevant published studies of n-hexane toxicity to develop exposure duration-specific SMACs for n-hexane of 200 ppm for 1 hour, 30 ppm for 24 hours, and 2.4 ppm for 7 days, 30 days, 180 days, and 1000 days.”

Note: From the abstract: “As we aim to expand human presence in space, we need to find viable approaches to achieve independence from terrestrial resources. Space biomining of the Moon, Mars and asteroids has been indicated as one of the promising approaches to achieve in-situ resource utilization by the main space agencies. Structural and expensive metals, essential mineral nutrients, water, oxygen and volatiles could be potentially extracted from extraterrestrial regolith and rocks using microbial-based biotechnologies. The use of bioleaching microorganisms could also be applied to space bioremediation, recycling of waste and to reinforce regenerative life support systems.” This article may be obtained online without charge.

Silicon nitride, a bioceramic for bone tissue engineering: A reinforced cryogel system with antibiofilm and osteogenic effects.
Front Bioeng Biotechnol. 2021 Dec 15;9:794586.
Note: From the abstract: “Silicon nitride (SiN [Si3N4]) is a promising bioceramic for use in a wide variety of orthopedic applications. Over the past decades, it has been mainly used in industrial applications, such as space shuttle engines, but not in the medical field due to scarce data on the biological effects of SiN. More recently, it has been increasingly identified as an emerging material for dental and orthopedic implant applications. Although a few reports about the antibacterial properties and osteoconductivity of SiN have been published to date, there have been limited studies of SiN-based scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. Here, we developed a silicon nitride reinforced gelatin/chitosan cryogel system (SiN-GC) by loading silicon nitride microparticles into a gelatin/chitosan cryogel (GC), with the aim of producing a biomimetic scaffold with antibiofilm and osteogenic properties.” This article may be obtained online without charge.
