Acute sleep deprivation in humans.
In: Reference Module in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Psychology. Elsevier, 2021.
PI: N. Goel
Note: From the abstract: “This article provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of acute total sleep deprivation in humans on various biological processes and on neurobehavioral performance, relative to robust interindividual differences. It reviews a number of promising biomarkers to predict responses to total sleep deprivation including genetic, omic (e.g., transcriptomic, epigenomic and metabolomic) and neuroimaging markers, as well as describes several biomathematical models of sleep-wake regulation and their role in research in this field. Additionally, this article offers effective strategies, including napping and caffeine administration, to combat subsequent deficits following total sleep deprivation.”
Journal Impact Factor: Not applicable to this publication.

Modeling stem cell nucleus mechanics using confocal microscopy.
Biomech Model Mechanobiol. 2021 Aug 23.
Note: From the abstract: “Nuclear mechanics is emerging as a key component of stem cell function and differentiation. While changes in nuclear structure can be visually imaged with confocal microscopy, mechanical characterization of the nucleus and its sub-cellular components require specialized testing equipment. …Here, we developed a computational framework for generating finite element models of isolated cell nuclei from multiple confocal microscopy scans and simple atomic force microscopy (AFM) tests.”
