Ultrasound measures of JVvol [jugular vein volume], PV [portal vein cross-sectional area], and MCV [middle cerebral vein velocity] were acquired while seated and supine before flight and early during spaceflight at days 45 (FD45) and late (FD150) with and without LBNP [lower body negative pressure].”
Journal Impact Factor: 3.044
Funding: “We thank our research collaborators and technical assistants at NASA JSC and KBR, Houston, Texas. We also thank the ISS crew members who volunteered for these studies. Impact of gravity on the perception of linear motion.
J Neurophysiol. 2021 Jul 28. Online ahead of print.
Note: From the abstract: “Previous studies have reported that perceptual thresholds for Earth-vertical (i.e., parallel to gravity) and Earth-horizontal (i.e., perpendicular to gravity) translations are equivalent in healthy adults, suggesting that the nervous system compensates for the presence of gravity. However, past study designs were not able to fully separate the effect of gravity from the potential effects of motion direction and body orientation…. In contrast to prior reports, our data suggest that the nervous system does not universally compensate for the effects of gravity during translation, instead, we showed that the co-linear effect of gravity significantly decreases the sensitivity to stimuli and this effect was larger for motions sensed by the utricles (inter-aural and naso-occipital translation) than for the saccules (superior-inferior translations).”
