Beckingham) Note: Readers interested in the name of this protein/gene may be interested in PI Kate Beckingham’s naming of other Drosophila genes she discovered while looking for gravity-related mutants. From her 2007 Task Book report: “Five of these genes are novel Drosophila genes and thus we were given the task of naming these genes. We chose the names of some of the best known space explorers of our age – yuri gagarin, alan shepard, john glenn, jim lovell, and neil armstrong.” From earlier correspondence with her, she reported that her university had contacted the living astronauts; they received nice letters back from John Glenn and Neil Armstrong, who “were obviously tickled pink by the idea!”
