NASA Spaceline Current Awareness 23 September 2011 (Recent Space Life Science Research Results)

NASA Spaceline Current Awareness 23 September 2011 (Recent Space Life Science Research Results)

Beginning October 1, 2011, there will be significant changes to the SPACELINE Current Awareness lists, web pages, and the planned database.

Due to a challenging budget environment for SPACELINE, the SPACELINE website and the planned production of a comprehensive database of the list content will cease. Those wishing to look at previous lists on the website should do so before October 3.

List content for the most relevant material will continue. The NASA-supported part of the Current Awareness lists will continue unchanged. The “Other” part of the list will continue to cover all life sciences space flight research and relevant ground research, including microgravity analogs (bed rest, hindlimb suspension, other disuse models), gravitational physiology and biology, and the most relevant research in fields like radiation, neuroscience, cardiovascular, etc. Less directly related material, such as basic bone and muscle physiology, exercise, aging, mechanobiology, etc. will be covered to a much reduced extent.

The Current Awareness lists will continue to be produced every other week for the time being in order to complete some related tasks. The lists will eventually resume on a weekly basis.

NOTE: Abstract: “On June 27-28, 2011 scientists from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), NASA, and academia met in Bethesda to discuss major lung cancer issues confronting each organization. For NASA – available data suggest lung cancer is the largest potential cancer risk from space travel for both men and women and quantitative risk assessment information for mission planning is needed. In space the radiation risk is from high energy and charge (HZE) nuclei (such as Fe) and high energy protons from solar flares and not from gamma radiation. By contrast the NCI is endeavoring to estimate the increased lung cancer risk from the potential wide-spread implementation of computed tomography (CT) screening in individuals at high risk for developing lung cancer based on the National Lung Cancer Screening Trial (NLST). For the latter, exposure will be x-rays from CT scans from the screening (which uses “low dose” CT scans) and also from follow-up scans used to evaluate abnormalities found during initial screening. Topics discussed included the risk of lung cancer arising after HZE particle, proton, and low dose Earth radiation exposure. The workshop examined preclinical models, epidemiology, molecular markers, “omics” technology, radiobiology issues, and lung stem cells (LSC) that relate to the development of lung cancer.”

So far, more than 500 astronauts have already travelled into space. The prevalence of RLS, affecting 5-10% of the general population, is so high that an appreciable proportion of astronauts with RLS might have already been in space. Therefore, it might be worth asking astronauts about the sensations they experience in their legs while lying down in zero gravity. Because changes in body position would not influence blood flow dynamics in zero gravity, it might be expected that any unpleasant sensations might disappear during the time spent in space, and then become exacerbated after returning to earth.”
