NASA Spaceline Current Awareness 15 July 2011 (Recent Space Life Science Research Results)

Starting next week, there will be a change to the Current Awareness list distribution schedule. For the next several months, lists will be distributed every other week instead of weekly. The next list will be sent on July 29.

The reason is a major enhancement of the Current Awareness lists. A number of individuals have asked if the lists are searchable. The short answer is no. We maintain an internal database of all list content, and we have started a process of converting this content into a web-based searchable database. There are many issues that will require effort to resolve, and therefore the plan is to work on this database during weeks in which a list is not produced. List content related to the space life sciences will not be affected during this biweekly list period, though there may be some reduction in content of borderline relevance (e.g., sarcopenia in aging adults). NASA management has agreed to this plan.

With the new system, content will be immediately available in the database since the lists will be generated from the database. Several minor enhancements are planned, such as tagging citations with a broad discipline name (cardiovascular, bone, radiation, etc.). The database will include some additional data that is not added to the lists, such as the abstract and the publisher’s url. Most of the content changes will be for new entries going forward; how many of these changes and updates of older data can be made retroactively is not yet clear. Conversion of all records (16,000+ records, dating from 1999) will likely take some time.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.
