NOTE: ISS results. From Discussion: “The data presented here document that astronauts who have access to sufficient resistance exercise, coupled with adequate energy intake and vitamin D status, can return from spaceflight missions of 4-6 months with measured bone mass and bone mineral densities seemingly no different from baseline measures – for most skeletal regions. Although further work is needed to refine these factors (by developing optimal exercise prescriptions and optimal nutrition), the results provide the first evidence that nutrition and exercise may be able to mitigate bone loss and reduce risk for spaceflight-induced osteoporosis. Comparison of the data from this study with data from crewmembers on earlier ISS missions and from the Russian space station Mir missions (figure) shows that when data are normalized to percentage change per month, the benefits of ARED over those of earlier exercise regimens are clear. Additionally, the nutrition findings document that some of the assumptions about human spaceflight are not always true. Specifically, energy intake, body mass, and lean body mass can be maintained during flight, and the same is true for vitamin D status.”
