NASA’s Human Research Program will fund nine ground-based proposals using beams of high-energy, heavy ions simulating space radiation. These studies will seek to: reduce the uncertainties in risk predictions for cancer and/or other late degenerative diseases; provide the necessary data and knowledge to establish significance of risks and to develop risk projection models for the central nervous system (CNS) and cardiovascular disease; and significantly advance the understanding of mechanisms of biological damage that underlies radiation health risks. This research is also expected to provide a substantial contribution to the scientific basis required before the future development of biological countermeasures to mitigate these risks as appropriate, and to aid in identification of key biomarkers for monitoring disease processes.
