ROSES-2021 Amendment 45 releases a new program element: A.47 Land-Cover/Land-Use Change (LCLUC) South/Southeast Asia Research Initiative (SARI) Synthesis. The scope of this special additional Land-Cover/Land-Use Change (LCLUC) program element in ROSES-2021 is to synthesize the accumulated knowledge from previous studies in the domain of the NASA South/Southeast Asia Research Initiative (SARI; http://sari.umd.edu).

NASA plans to fund two synthesis teams: one for South Asia and one for Southeast Asia. These teams will assess past and recent trends in land-use change and apply theoretical and analytical frameworks appropriate for understanding the physical and socioeconomic interactions that influence LCLUC. The synthesis must address both the biophysical and socioeconomic aspects of land-use change and encompass the major land-use change sectors, such as forests, agriculture, urban, and wetlands. The results must highlight how the research findings could help develop more sustainable land-management strategies. Each proposal team must be multi-institutional and interdisciplinary, with at least three senior team members having diverse expertise, and include international partners (on a no-exchange-of-funds basis) from the region to provide regional insights and perspectives.

Notices of intent are requested by December 17, 2021, and proposals are due February 16, 2022.

On or about November 17, 2021, this Amendment to the NASA Research Announcement “Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) 2021” (NNH21ZDA001N) will be posted on the NASA research opportunity homepage at https://solicitation.nasaprs.com/ROSES2021 and will appear on SARA’s ROSES blog at: https://science.nasa.gov/researchers/sara/grant-solicitations/roses-2021/

Questions concerning LCLUC: SARI should be directed to both Garik Gutman at ggutman@nasa.govand Krishna Vadrevu at krishna.p.vadrevu@nasa.gov.
