Description

NASA/LaRC plans to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a requirement to study system concepts for developing an advanced supersonic parachute system for future Mars landers.

NASA envisions this parachute development program to include design and development studies, sub-scale development tests, and full-scale development and qualification tests of the new parachute system.

The Government is intending to release a solicitation for conducting a parachute system concept study to evaluate parachute system design and development options.

The system concept study is expected to include elements such as:

a)   Parachute system preliminary design including canopy configurations, reefing methods, materials, packaging, and parachute deployment systems.

b)   Parachute system analysis and modeling including entry trajectory simulations, parachute aerodynamics and aeroheating, porosity effects, multi-body dynamics, aeroelasticity, and fluid-structures interaction.

c)   Recommendations for development testing and qualification testing of parachute systems for Mars entry and descent environments including wind tunnel tests, drop tests, and flight tests. The Government does not intend to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12.

See Note 26. The NAICS Code and Size Standard are 541710 and 1,500 employees, respectively.

All responsible sources may submit an offer which shall be considered by the agency. The anticipated release date of the RFP is on or about June 1, 2005 with an anticipated offer due date of on or about June 30, 2005. An ombudsman has been appointed — See NASA Specific Note “B”.
