Loss of Bank of America Information on NASA Employees

On Friday, Feb. 25 Bank of America and the GSA Smart Pay Program notified 40 Federal agencies that computer tapes containing purchase, travel and fleet account information were lost in late December 2004 at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Cargo Facility.

According to investigators, the tapes were not lost due to theft or criminal activity, but may have been inadvertently misplaced.

There have been no incidents of fraud or misuse of the missing information since the incident occurred.

Investigators have been advised that as many as 21,000 NASA employees could potentially be involved in this matter. Bank of America has begun the process of sending letters to each person affected. Those letters should arrive sometime this week and will provide an update and a special toll free number for cardholders should they have questions or concerns.

The identified cardholders’ personal information has been flagged by Bank of America with other banks, financial institutions and/or credit bureaus. We stress again, however, that there has been no apparent fraud committed on any of the accounts to date. NASA cardholders should be aware that the account information on the missing tapes is incomplete and can only be interpreted with properly encoded software. Please contact Bank of America or the Office of Security and Program Protection at 202/358-1737 for more information.
