NASA MODIS Image of the Day: September 30, 2008 - Typhoon Jangmi
This image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite shows Typhoon Jangmi near Taiwan and the Philippines on September 27, 2008.
Taiwan is near the upper left corner of the image, half out-of-frame.
The storm has a well-developed eye and distinct spiral bands. By September 28, the storm had become a Category 4 Super Typhoon. On this date, the storm came ashore of Taiwan with sustained winds of 250 kilometers per hour (155 miles per hour or 135 knots). Two were killed and 30 injured as the Jangmi crossed the island, according to the Associated Press.
