In late October, 2012 wildfires burned in the northern part of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of the fires and smoke in this region on October 26, 2012. Wildfires burn south of the city of Tijuana and just east of the city of Ensenada. Other fires are burning in the foothills of the mountains south of these cities. Plumes of smoke released from these fires coalesce and billow to the west over the Pacific Ocean. On the other side of the Baja peninsula, sediments from the Colorado River entering the Gulf of California, coloring the waters tan and aqua.
