Images

This image of the eastern Aleutian Islands was captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on November 19, 2008.

The Aleutians are a chain of islands off of Alaska, that extend toward the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia.

The southwestern corner of mainland Alaska is visible on the right side of the image. The Bering Sea dominates the upper left half of the image, and the Northern Pacific Ocean dominates the bottom right half. The Aleutian Islands are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of volcanic activity caused by the shifting and moving of the Earth’s crust. One of the active volcanos located in this island chain, the Kasatochi Volcano, had a recent eruption in August of 2008.
