A weekend of heavy rain and thunderstorms caused massive flooding in the Tennessee region in early May 2010.

CNN reported more than 13 inches of rain at Nashville’s airport, with higher amounts elsewhere in the region.

At least 27 deaths have been blamed on the flooding, with 18 of those in Tennessee. It is the Cumberland River that runs through Nashville, and that has caused so much damage in the city. This image shows the flooded rivers – the Tennessee River is the larger river to the left. The Cumberland meanders off the East. The MODIS on the Terra captured this image on May 3, 2010. If you move your mouse over the image, you’ll see what the unflooded state of the river looks like. The secondary image was captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on April 13. Both images are false-color and use a combination of light visible to human eyes and light our eyes cannot see. Clouds are a translucent pale blue, water appears navy blue or black, and vegetation appears bright green.
