The Carpathian Mountains are featured in this image, captured by the MODIS on the Terra satellite, on March 14, 2007. This mountain range stretches through about 900 miles of eastern Europe. Though they are sometimes called a mountain chain, the Carpathians aren’t actually an uninterrupted chain they consist of several geologically distinctive groups, with as much structural variety as the Alps. However, they are not as high a range, and don’t have the loft peaks, glaciers, high waterfalls, and other similar features common in the Alps. The Carpathians do not have areas that keep their snow cover throughout the year!

The black lines on the image denote the country borders. There are many countries shown in this image. Starting from the top right corner, and going clockwise, they are: the Ukraine, Moldava, Romania, Serbia, Sarajevo, Croatia, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Poland.
