Images

Fires, probably part of the late water/early spring clean-up of agricultural areas, were burning near the China/Russia border when these images were captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on March 8, 2008.

The fires (marked with red dots) are mostly north of the Amur River which runs along the border between eastern Russia (top) and China (bottom).

The city of Khabarovsk, Russia sits near the center of the image. The main image is false color, which shows the burn scars on the land. If you move your mouse over the image, you can see the same scene in true-color. Locations of actively burning fires are marked in red. Dark brown patches nearby are burned areas. The bare winter ground appears light tan, and snow still lies over much of the region. Boreal forest areas appear deep green, and frozen rivers wind across the landscape.
