NASA MODIS Image of the Day: June 5, 2007 - The Gilbert Islands
These islands played a part in the war in the Pacific during WWII – some of the islands were occupied by Japan, retaken by the US, and used by the US to support the invasion of the Marshall islands in 1944.
Both the Marshall Islands and the Gilberts were named for 18th century ship captains that used to cross through the area.
