Many wildfires continue to rage in Canada’s Northwest Territories, Alberta and Saskatchewan and smoke and heat signatures were detected by NASA’s Aqua satellite on June 28 at 20:10 UTC (4:10 p.

m.

EDT). The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard the Aqua satellite captured this image of the fires and identified the hot spots in red. The smoke from all fires were blowing in an northeasterly direction as winds shifted to the southwest. The government of Saskatchewan reported 19 fires in the province. Alberta’s Sustainable Resource Development agency reported 22 active fires continued to burn on June 28, 2011. Some fires were burning around Lake Athabasca (top left), which is located in northeastern Alberta and northwestern Saskatchewan.
