Images

A dust plume blew along the Iraq-Iran border on July 18, 2007.

The MODIS flying on NASA’s Terra satellite took this picture the same day.

The dust plume appears as a pale beige blur, just thick enough to make the underlying ground features appear faint. Although thickest along the Iraq-Iran border, the plume also extends well south into Iraq. The countries shown here are, from the top left, clockwise, are Turkey, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Syria. The Persian Gulf is at the lower right.
