Images

Today’s featured image is a fire map compiled from MODIS data.

These maps are created every 10 days, each showing the locations of all the fires detected by the MODIS on board the Terra and Aqua satellites during this time period.

Each colored dot indicates a location where MODIS detected at least one fire. Color ranges from red where the fire count is low to yellow where number of fires is large. This particular map shows the time period between January 11 and January 20, 2009. Though this image only shows part of the world, the high-resolution version shows the whole world. You can view this high resolution (and global) map here. The fire maps were created by Jacques Descloitres for the MODIS Rapid Response System, the fire algorithm was created by Louis Giglio. The background Blue Marble image was created by Reto Stokli.
