NASA MODIS Image of the Day: February 7, 2008 - Bermuda
Brilliant blue and green clouds of phytoplankton bloom around Bermuda in this image captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on February 4, 2008.
Phytoplankton are tiny marine organisms that, much like their land-based plant relatives, use sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into food.
The variety of colors can be due to varying concentrations and types of phytoplankton and the chlorophyll and other pigments they contain. Bermuda is in the North Atlantic Ocean, off the East Coast of the United States.
