NASA MODIS Image of the Day: February 28, 2007 – Tropical Cyclones Gamede and Humba in the Indian Ocean
This image, acquired by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on February 25, 2007, shows not one, but two tropical cyclones. Both cyclones are shown in the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of Madagascar. Gamede is the storm on the left and Humba is on the right. As of February 27, Gamede was bringing storm surf and heavy rains to Madagascar, though the storm seemed to be staying away from settled areas. The storm is tracking towards the south-southwest and is not headed towards mainland Africa. This same region was brushed by Cyclone Favio just days ago.
Cyclone Humba is actually further away from Madagascar than it appears. Humba also looks well formed in this image, but as of February 27, it had lost some of its structure and is now classified as an extra-tropical cyclone. If you click on this link, you can see a view of the Earth, which shows the locations of both storms on February 27th.
