In the last week of January 2007, a forest fire burned on the Hawaiian island of Maui. This image from January 26 from the MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite shows the fire (location marked in red) casting a long plume of smoke westward over the Pacific Ocean.

As of February 7, 2006, the fire, now under control partially due to rainfall, had burned anywhere from 1800 to 2300 acres of pine and sandalwood forest located in the Kula Forest Reserve and Polipoli Springs State Park. 16 miles of hiking trail and 6 miles of roads were affected by the fire, with burned tress continuing to fall and pose a hazard. The fire was reportedly caused by a lit cigarette, discarded by a hiker, and found by the state Division of Forestry and Wildfire on the Upper Waiohuli Trail.
