Capped with silvery white snow, the Alps arc gracefully across northern Italy, Switzerland, Austria, southern Germany and France.

The Italian peninsula is located in the lower right corner of the image.

The island of Corsica is visible near the bottom center of the image. In the center of the image, at the foot of the Alps is a bank of low clouds. Though it’s hard to tell the difference, some of these clouds appear to be fog. If you look closely, you’ll see that the fingers of the clouds on the southern edge of the cloud bank follow the valleys of the mountains very closely. Beneath those clouds, the Italian city of Milan lies. On the coast of the Ligurian Sea is the city of Genoa, located nearly directly south of Milan. This image was captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on December 22, 2008.
