The MODIS on the Aqua satellite captured this image on December 21, 2008.

Shown are the shallow waters of the Gulf of Batabano, located between Cuba (top) and the Isle of Youth (bottom left).

The Gulf appears aqua because it is so shallow – it is less than 200 feet deep. There are actually more islands in this region than just the large Isle of Youth – there are about 350 small islands that are part of the Canarreos Archipelago. This inlet of water is on the southwestern side of Cuba. Jutting out into the Gulf in the east is the Zapata Peninsula.
