NASA MODIS Image of the Day: August 27, 2012 – Southeast Europe
The skies about southeastern Europe were clear on August 21, 2012 as NASA’s Terra satellite passed overhead. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying aboard that satellite captured this true-color image at 09:45 UTC (5:25 a.m. EDT). In this image, black lines have been added to mark the country borders. The deep blue body of water, which is stained tan by sediment in spots, is the Adriatic Sea. Italy borders on the west of the Adriatic. The countries on the east coast of the Adriatic Sea, from north to south, are Croatia, Montenegro and Albania. Bosnia and Herzegovina lie to the east of Croatia and, other than a 20 km (12 miles) of coastline on the Adriatic coast which surrounds the city of Neum, is entirely landlocked. Serbia lies to the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, and Bulgaria lies to the south of Serbia. Romania and Bulgaria have a coastline on the Black Sea, which can be seen on the eastern side of the image. Greece has a western coastline on the Adriatic Sea, an eastern coastline on the Black Sea and a southern coast on the Aegean Sea. Turkey lies in the southeastern section of the image.
